Video as a Speech Evaluation & Feedback Tool

Have you ever wondered what you look and sound like as you give a speech or presentation ? I'm sure you have and maybe you just thought it would be too complicated or expensive for your club to purchase a video camera.

The objectivity provided by video is a valuable way you can enhance your Toastmaster experience.   A video record of all your speeches enables you to see how you are doing at the time and how you have improved over time.  Review each speech with your mentor or whoever you trust to give you honest and constructive feedback and see just how much more you will learn from reviewing each speech over time (in addition to the oral and written evaluation you already received).

Video technology as a feedback tool for use in club meetings is now within the budgets of many Toastmaster clubs.

Here are some links to video camera manufacturers that will get you started:

SONY - CANON - PANASONIC - JVC - SANYO - HITACHI - SAMSUNG

Join the conversation by contributing to the Expanding Your Toastmaster Experience Blog.

Share your success stories, do’s and don’ts or your thoughts about using video as an evaluation and feedback tool in Toastmaster clubs.

Create videos about your Toastmaster experience, your Club executive experience or videos that teach, educate, persuade, inspire or make us laugh. Share them with the world by creating your own video site or send them to District 21 for consideration (we are looking for great member created videos for District 21 YouTube Video Channel -- contact Rodney Denno at rodney@ewoliving.com).

We want to capture and share the collected knowledge, experiences, intellect and wisdom of all District 21 Toastmasters.

In addition to making videos of your speeches you may also want to make videos to help others in specific ways.  Here are a few examples of the kinds of videos that can help:

  • Explain an Officer role: Toastmasters who are considering taking on an officer role as part of their TM journey can use your video to find out more before making a commitment.
  • Membership Building: Low membership clubs looking for information on how to retain members and grow club membership.
  • Education Sessions: Video record speeches from 'The Better Speaker Series', 'Speechcraft', 'Leadership Excellence Serries', etc. so others can learn from your performance.

You can also help by sharing your thoughts, ideas, experiences and wisdom:

How does your club use video as an effective feedback and evaluation tool?

What are the best lighting techniques, best way of getting high quality audio and video?

What content and quality standards do you feel the district should apply to member created videos that will be hosted in the District 21 YouTube Video Channel?

What are your experiences, positive or negative, about how effective video feedback has been for you and your club?

What are your thoughts on how we can effectively create training videos for District 21?

What training videos would you like to see created first?

What are the best (most cost effective) cameras, audio pickup, etc. currently available?
What are the current video trends? Is new video technology coming?

What are your thoughts on how we can best promote the value of video as an effective speech evaluation and feedback tool?

What do you think is the best way to provide this information to District 21 TM clubs?
